HELENA-WEST HELENA- Antonio Davis scored on a 15-yard touchdown run with 8:18 remaining in the game to give the Wynne Yellowjackets (2-1) a 20-13 victory over the Helena-West Helena Central Cougars (1-2) on a night where the rain never stopped at Cad Polk Stadium.
Helena-West Helena would get on the board first. After stalling at the Wynne 4-yard line on their first possession, the Cougar defense forced a fumble at the 1-yard line. Keith Hays scored on a 1-yard touchdonw run on the next play. Sagar Patel kicked the PAT to give Helena-West Helena a 7-0 lead with 6:45 to go in the first quarter.
The Wynne Yellowjackets responded with a 9-play, 64-yard drive . Davis scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 25.2 seconds left in the opening quarter. The PAT failed and Helena-West Helena led 7-6.
On the opening play of the second quarter, Cougar Quarterback Curly Brewer hit Anthony Lewis for a 57-yard touchdown pass with 11:51 to go in the first half. The PAT was wide left, but the Cougars led 13-6, which would be the score at the intermission.
Both offenses sputtered to start the 3rd quarter. Wynne finally got its offense moving late in the third quarter when the Yellowjackets went on a 12-play, 57-yard drive. On 4th and goal at the two-yard line with 48.7 seconds left in the third. The try for two failed and the Cougars led by one at 13-12.
After Davis’s 4th quarter run to cap off the 12-play, 70-yard drive, Morris ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 20-13.
Helena-West Helena would mount one last drive, taking the ball from their own 8-yard line to the Wynne 25, but turned the ball over on downs.
Davis led Wynne with 169 yards rushing.
